Composition Photography Workshop - 2 Hours - Herne Bay

Overview A focused, two-hour workshop designed to refine your eye for composition. Perfect for people who want stronger photos, amateur photographers looking to improve, or enthusiasts wanting practical, hands-on guidance. We’ll concentrate on simple, repeatable techniques that elevate your images and help you tell a clearer story through composition.

What you’ll learn

  • Core principles: rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, balance, and negative space.

  • How to use light and perspective to enhance composition, including practical tips for shooting in natural light and mixed light situations common at weddings.

  • Creating emotional impact: arranging elements to emphasise connection, expression, and atmosphere.

  • Practical framing: choosing backgrounds, isolating subjects, and minimising distractions.

  • Lens choices and focal length: how perspective shifts with focal length and how to use it creatively.

  • Quick composition checks: a simple checklist to use on the day to ensure every frame counts.

Session format

  • Brief introduction (10 minutes): goals, camera settings, and a short review of essential theory.

  • Guided shooting exercises (70 minutes): hands-on practice with specific composition challenges. Exercises include portrait framing, environmental storytelling, using foreground interest, and dynamic symmetry drills.

  • Review and feedback (30 minutes): immediate constructive critique of images taken during the session, plus tips to improve shots in-camera and in post.

Who this is for

  • Couples preparing for engagement or wedding photography who want to understand what makes strong images.

  • Hobbyists and beginners with DSLRs or mirrorless cameras seeking practical composition skills.

  • Photographers looking to refresh their approach to visual storytelling.

What to bring

  • Your camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or high-end compact) and a lens or two you commonly use.

  • Fully charged battery and spare memory card.

  • Comfortable shoes for moving through different shooting setups.

  • Optional: a notebook for quick notes. Written notes will be provided.

Location and group size: Workshops are held at a nearby scenic location suited to practical exercises. Small groups (maximum of 6 participants) ensure personalised attention and meaningful feedback.

Outcome By the end of the two hours you’ll be able to see and create stronger compositions confidently, apply composition techniques under time pressure, and understand how to shape images that tell a clear, emotional story — essential skills for wedding days and beyond.

Book a session to design your learning experience around what matters most to you and your photography goals.
